Subud Worldwide

An international Spiritual Movement

Subud is a global spiritual movement that began in Indonesia in the 1920s, founded by  Muhammad Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo. The movement is non-political, non-denominational, and  non-sectarian, focusing solely on the spiritual practice of “latihan” — a form of spiritual exercise.  Subud does not engage in political activities or endorsements, emphasizing a purely spiritual  path for its members.

Global Expansion and Reach

Today, Subud is present in over 80 countries, with hundreds of local groups globally. Its  inclusive nature allows members to maintain their own religious beliefs and cultural norms, with no formal  teachings or doctrines beyond the practice of latihan.

Structure and Governance: The Role of WSA

To coordinate the movement’s international activities, the World Subud Association (WSA) was  formed in 1959. WSA is a non-profit organization registered in the United States and  headquartered in Bellevue, Washington. It oversees Subud’s global structure, coordinating  activities and events such as the Subud International Congress, held every four years.

The Significance of International Helpers

An essential part of Subud’s international structure is the role of the International Helpers. These  experienced members are appointed to support and guide other Subud members worldwide,  offering spiritual support and advice on the practice of latihan. They travel to different countries,  visiting local groups, and participating in Subud events to promote unity and spiritual connection  among members.

Subud International Congress: A Global Gathering

The Subud International Congress is held every four years, bringing together members from  across continents. These gatherings have been hosted in various locations, most recently Germany, Mexico, New Zealand, Austria and Indonesia, demonstrating Subud’s worldwide reach. The Congress provides  a space for Subud members to connect, share experiences, and engage in the practice of latihan  on a global scale.

Susila Dharma International: The Charitable Wing of Subud

Subud’s charitable wing, Susila Dharma International (SDI), is a crucial component of the  movement, embodying Subud’s commitment to service and compassion. SDI engages in  humanitarian and social development projects worldwide, demonstrating that spiritual growth  can lead to tangible actions that benefit humanity.

Subud’s Journey to the West

Subud’s journey beyond Indonesia began in the 1950s when John Bennett, a British philosopher and spiritual teacher,  invited Muhammad Subuh to the United Kingdom. The first Subud group outside Indonesia was established in the UK in 1957. Following this, Subud spread across Europe as Muhammad Subuh travelled and gave public presentations. His visit to the United States in the late 1950s further  expanded Subud’s reach, with groups forming rapidly in major US cities during the early 1960s.
